Indian Summer has hit and it’s been 90 degrees here. That didn’t stop me from trying on this coat. I’ve had it on my wishlist since it debuted.
J Crew wool pinstripe topcoat ($298) runs regular 00 – 16 (b1463) and petite (b1484). Color choices are charcoal ivory (grey) and navy snow. Melton wool by Manifattura Di Carmignano/Italy, but not 100% wool. Here’s the breakdown. 78% wool, 10% poly, 10% nylon, 2% other fibers, 100% poly lining.
Size 4 – navy snow – It looks navy in-person, but not as light as it does in the stock photo. The size 4 is the right fit if I needed a regular. I would get the 6P. Note that the sleeves and overall cut are slim. I doubt you can get it over another blazer. If you do, I’ll be impressed. The cut is very straight. The lapels are notched.
It’s definitely stylish. However, I felt like I was borrowing my brother’s coat when I was wearing it. The fit is definitely slim and that’s good. Other than that, it doesn’t have details that make it feminine.
Flap pockets. No side-entry. I wouldn’t expect that on a topcoat style, but I’m pointing it out in case you were wondering.
Nice interior, envelope pocket and burgundy trim.
Let’s look at last year’s topcoat. I bought this one and had the sleeves and length shortened. It’s 80% wool, 20% nylon, but is less heavy, visually, than the wool pinstripe topcoat. Both jackets are cut straight. The pockets sit higher on this one, giving more attention to the waist. The slightly rounded lapel softens the look. I feel feminine in this one.
