When I reviewed this silk sweatshirt from J Crew, I didn’t think to take a pair of pants into the fitting room to try with it. I happened to have on a pair of leggings that I’d worn with a dress.
In the review I said,
I still would never wear leggings as pants. I will admit that for one second I kind of thought the top & leggings were cool but, I think going out w/tight, thin leggings as pants is sharing too much information whether the wearer is very fit or not so much.
My dad never let me leave the house in leggings, even if I had a sweatshirt covering my rear. I really wanted to fit in with the other girls & wear a baggy sweatshirt w/pants, but I never had the opportunity in high school. When I was even younger, I was allowed to go to the skating rink in my tights & skating dress if I was going from the car right into the rink. Even then, if we were going anywhere after skating, I couldn’t flounce around with only tights & the dress. I had warm up suits to wear over the skating outfit. When I was in my 20s living on my own & working out daily, I wore bike shorts to the gym. It was the 90s. I’m excused. Even then, I wore Adidas track pants over the bike shorts until I got to the gym. Sometimes I’d wear a sweatshirt and the bike shorts on the way out of the gym, but I was going right from the gym, to the car and home. I guess my dad ingrained in me that neither leggings nor tights are pants. Even if I were very fit now, I don’t see myself going out like this. I don’t want want to share my rear w/the world. And I really don’t want to see the shape, tone or lack of tone of someone’s fanny thru their skin tight leggings.

I totally agree with you about not wearing leggings as pants. To me that generally means wearing something longer on the top half that covers the backside. But I wonder if you have any other tips or comments on how to wear leggings versus pants I think there is a lot of room for mistakes on this topic and would love to get your thoughts! Especially since there are quite a few jcrewpants that tend more to the legging side (like the Minnie pant). What are the rules for that situation?
On a more general note, I sometimes have concerns about the way women dress and the message we’re sending. We’re not any safer today than years before. In fact, I think the world is sometimes more dangerous for us. I support a woman’s right to dress the way she chooses. Men need to be in control of themselves. But they’re not always going to be. Period. There are ways to be sexy and places in which to be sexy. I support that. Personally, I would do so without leggings as pants. Skirts that are very short aren’t as bad as leggings as pants. That’s just my personal feeling. Let’s be for real. A major issue of leggings as pants is showing one’s crotch. I think in general if someone is wearing leggings w/a tunic, it works. If they’re wearing a short top, leggings and we can see outlined details in the front and back it’s not a good look. Not #gigiapproved. 😉
p.s. There’s a Leggings Are Not Pants page on Facebook.
